The University of Toledo has made a significant commitment to enhancing the Disability Studies Program by hiring three new faculty members over the next three years. At this time the program invites applications for the first of those hires, a tenured or tenure-track faculty position to commence Fall 2012. The successful applicant will develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Disability Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a record of significant scholarly achievement and play a leading role in the growth of the Disability Studies Program.

Disability Studies explores the meaning of human difference – how we value some bodies and devalue others, how we accept or resist certain notions of “normal” behavior, function, and appearance. Rather than positioning the range of human circumstances that today we call "disability" simply within a medical framework, Disability Studies draws upon the strengths of many disciplines to seek to understand the full spectrum of human variation, challenging the barriers which may prevent disabled people from participating fully in their communities by promoting the ideals of inclusion, independent living, and community integration.

A Ph.D. in Disability Studies or a closely related field is required. Given the intensely interdisciplinary nature of Disability Studies, applications are welcomed from a wide variety of fields, from the humanities to the social sciences, from human services to business, from education to health sciences. Candidates should demonstrate clear evidence of (1) a national and international reputation, or their potential to establish one through an active program of research and/or creative activity; and (2) the potential to teach a diverse population effectively. An existing track record is a definite plus.

Applications should include a cover letter (including teaching and research interests); current CV; recent and representative publications or conference papesr (or other appropriate work sample – for example, a filmmaker might submit a film rather than a paper); evidence of teaching effectiveness; and letters from three references.
